One easy step to battle those calories and calories out

Just came from the grocery store and I found out something interesting.

This local Chicago store was having a 12-pack soda sale $2.00 for each 12 pack. The rule was 5 per person per day. The checker mentioned that people come in each day and buy 5 each day.

That got me thinking…

Let’s just say each 12-pack is 120 calories per can (12 oz Coke) and lets do the math..

  • 12 x 120 = 1,440 calories per 12 pack.
  • 1,440 x 5 = 7,200 calories per visit
  • 7,200 x 7 in a week = 50,400!!!!

Say this is for a family of 4

50,400 / 4 = 12,600 calories for each family member

Now I understand these numbers are hypothetical but even if they are in the ballpark this is scarey. This doesn’t even take in account all the other not so good stuff found in soda/pop. People could argue they drink diet-soda/pop, so that might take of the “calorie” problem, but it still doesn’t take in account the other stuff found in soda/pop.

People wonder why we are facing an overweight/obese problem in this country. Folks we are made up of 60% to 70% water, not soda/pop.

So the final score

Soda/pop 120 calories per 12 ounce can vs. 0 for water
Diet-soda/pop 0 calories per 12 ounce can vs. 0 for water – minus all that extra stuff.

Water, Water, Water, Water (OK once in awhile pop open a can of your favorite soda/pop)

So when people come up to me and ask what is one thing they could do to start them down the path in living fitter/healthier here you go!

It’s hard to stop soda pop… but it was very helpful to me when I did. I was never a fan of diet pop, so I went to water (mostly) and sometimes iced tea. I actually knew people who gained weight after switching from regular to diet pop…wonder why?

      Gary,

I agree it is hard to stop drinking soda pop, but this is part of making a commitment to a fitter and healthier lifestyle. Without the commitment to a lifestyle change none of this works and a person goes back to square one or even worse they keep going down the path of being overweight. People have asked me what is one easy step to help them move to a fitter and healthier lifestyle, well this is it. I am not saying you have to quit cold turkey, but soda pop is one easy step because soda pop really has no benefit as a food. So if you choose tostep off the soda pop bandwagon you only benefit yourself.

One last note, it is also a way to keep the bills down a bit. Have you noticed how much restaurants actually charge for a cup of soda! Water is free!

I still wonder about the issues with diet pop. I don’t like the taste, but apparently there is a chemical in diet pop that is very bad for you, and can actually promote weight gain as well.
