Pizza Hut or Not to Pizza Hut
4 servings for $3.07 or 2 slices for $4.55? Which one would pick? I hear it all the time, “Going out to eat is quicker and cheaper.” Well let’s focus on Pizza Hut for a moment. (This is not to pick on Pizza Hut, you really could insert any of the pizza chains in their slot and pretty much get the same results.)
$4.55 is for 2 large slices of the Supreme Pan Pizza. You know the one all the good stuff, because is it “Supreme”!

- 40 g fat (16g saturated)

Now for the home version: Loaded Pizza
- 300 calories
- 14 g fat (6g saturated)
- 780 mg sodium
- All for $3.07 and that is serving 4
- 12″ Boboli whole-wheat thin pizza crust
- 1 cup tomato-basil pasta sauce (the book suggests Muir Glen, never heard of it)
- 2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella
- 15 slices turkey pepperoni
- 1/2 cup sliced onion
- 1/2 cup chopped roasted red peppers
- 1/4 green olives
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 jar (6 oz) artichoke hearts, drained
- 1 cup fresh basil leaves (optional because of cost)
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Cover the crust with sauce and then cheese
- Sprinkle with te pepperoni, onion, peppers, olives, gralic, pepper flakes and artichockes
- Bake 12 to 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbling
Now I am not much of a fan for olives or artichokes, so I simply replace the unwanted veggies with veggies I enjoy.
Now for the savings:
- 500 calories
- $1.48
Pizza once a month = $17.76 a year and 6,000 calories a year! That is almost 2 pounds!
