Quiz Time – Sam’s Club – update

No one what’s to take a stab at the quiz?

I recently walked through a Sam’s Club, what an interesting place. Where else can you pick up a set of four tires, a gallon peanut butter and a fireman’s hose nossel for your garden hose? The real interesting part of the club is the food section.

Remember 66% of American are overweight and 33% of those are obese. Seeing the size of the food portions it is easy to understand why…I mean it is scary. A gallon of this, 196 oz. of that and frozen food packages the size of a pillow, made me think why do we need such quantities?

On to the quiz.

The answer is 18,000 calories…

What is the question?

I can see where some folks like to buy shelf goods in bulk as there are savings there. I suppose the key is to eat small portions if you buy buik goods. Interesting, and not-so-good news about the pizza, but I like the recipes.

      Gary,

I see your point, the goal is to eat small portions throughout the day, this feeds a persons metabolism. But there is a problem with that thought when you walk into a Sam’s Club or even a Costco type store. Walking up and down the food aisles the problem is the portion size of everything. We are all humans if we buy the 196 oz jar (or should I say tub) of peanut butter and it sits at home the temptation is there. It is just human nature to sit there and eat more if the portion size is larger. The second problem when I walk down these aisles most (not all but most) of the food is cheap in quality at least nutritionally. For the most part the food comes in a box, bag, sack, and a tub, just like in a regular grocery store these are the items one should try to avoid or limit if possible. One of my sayings if it grows out of the ground or comes directly from an animal it is generally better to eat that, the less it is processed or altered by humans the better. Sure there might be real dollar savings to your pocket book, but at what cost to your health?

      Smart Decision!

        Jim,
I have to say that we used to shop at Sams for the food to save money by purchasing in bulk without thinking about it (frozen items, chips, pop, etc.).

Since we have been working out at the gym and eating healthier, we have changed our outlook dramatically on the food they sell. Just like on the Biggest Loser, we started looking not only the nutritional information, but also at the ingredients on the labels. If the ingredients list is more than 5-7 items, do you truly want to be putting that many processed chemicals/preservatives in you? Seriously, the next time you pick up a bag of chips, count how many ingredients are listed.

We still shop there but more for the common staples in life (cat food, toiletries, etc). When it comes down to going there for food, it’s primarily the items that are used to cook (rubs for chicken/pork/fish), pepper, EVOO, or something like a bag of already shelled walnuts (to add 1/8 cup to a salad). I think if you look at the items you can buy in bulk for ingredients for home cooking rather than processed food ready to eat, you can still make good decisions there.
Keep up the great work. This blog is very enlightening and inspirational.

A very interesting way of looking at Sam’s Club. I agree Sam’s Club in bulk for TP and other things is a great idea, but I really like the idea looking for items you use to prepare your meals. I did notice a large selection of spices, rubs and herbs that would make meals more tasty and interesting.

This is what I mean by making smart choices! Keep up the great work, hopefully someone else picks up on this idea!
