The road to the Ironman – A slow week

How many times have I said this. This Ironman journey is turning out to be more a mental challenge versus a physical challenge. Going into this week I had been on a pretty good up swing for three or four weeks, but this week was a challenge. Going into it I knew I had to travel which is always tough staying on focus. The long hours flying, meetings and eating out make it almost impossible to stay on target. So I planned it to be a slow week but still it makes it that much harder to get going once more, thus it is more about the mental side than the physical side.

Time to refocus, pick myself up, dust myself off and kick myself in the butt. So this is what I did to accomplish that.

  1. Bought me a new pair of running shoes (love new running shoes). The old pair left my legs tired and sore, so now I have a new pair that will get me past the next 300 to 500 miles.
  2. I thought about the people who are inspiring me. I really focused on two friends, Sara and George. Sara is going the same journey I went through a few years back with weight loss and every time I see her I smile because I know she is getting it (life is better fitter and healthier). George is gentlemen going to break the world record for spinning. 300 Hours! Even though the time is impressive, I look more at his dedication in pursuing such a high goal. Both will be in my thoughts as the miles and hours pile up in the coming months.

I go into a new week, refocused on my fitness goals along with Kim and I have made a promise to each other to tighten up our nutrition (as we are going to Cancun in 71 days).

I know there will be more up times coming and also more low times coming, but I feel like I am learning to handle them better as time goes along.

Tomorrow I will lace up my new shoes, get my miles in, put on a new swim suit and do my laps, hop back on that bike that sits on the trainer and focus on my weights eagerly waiting for that date in September.

What kind of new running shoes did you buy? I know a lot of factors go into choosing running shoes, and its not a simple process. Perhaps after using them a while you could write a review on this blog!

I have been stuck on the Brooks Glycerin shoes for a number of years. They just seem familiar to my feet and best of all no feet, leg, knee, or hip problems to speak of since I was introduced to these little beauties. Dose that mean they will work for you? Maybe. That is why it is important to go to a running store versus a big chain store. The extra bonus is they are not bright yellow or pea green, they are actually blue!

Psychology & sociology, to an extent, play equal parts in this journey (lifestyle change I guess). However, when the power of the mind is faltering its necessary to have positive sociological experiences to pump us up psychologically. That’s where you play a role in my journey! You’ve been there, done that……you are a positive force and you push me outside of my workout comfort zone. Just a couple weeks have made a difference. Thank you!!
