The Road to the Ironman – I just found a way to make this journey even crazier!!! I can’t believe I did this…

Well I cannot believe I just did something really really really crazy…I just entered in the Ironman World Championship lottery. For those who don’t understand the magnitude of what I just did, let me see if I can draw you a better picture.

Most people know of the the Ironman from the coverage NBC shows every December of the World Championship in Hawaii. That is what I just entered in to have a chance to run with the elite. Before anyone including myself gets to ahead of themselves it is a lottery. The founders of this race had the smarts to leave a group of slots open for the common folk who would never be fast enough to qualify for the race, but show the determination to be an Ironman. There are 100 slots open for us in the USA at a cost of $40. There are also additional 50 slots open for joining the Ironman club at $50 bringing the grand total of $90 for two lottery tickets.

Wait before you scream $90, think about this. If you had a chance to participate in the Super Bowl, World Series or the Olympics for 90 bucks would you?

Again let’s not put the cart before the horse. There are 150 slots and the last I heard there are over 15,000 people apply for these spots. The lottery closes at the end of February and the winners are announced when they televise the Ironman 70.3 championships usually in late April.

We will see, I have heard of people getting in on their first try, but others are on their 12th time. It is a lottery…

Oh yeah, if you do get a slot you must complete either a full or 70.3 by August 31, 2010. So that means the Ironman I am doing in Wisconsin doesn’t even qualify. I am planing to do the Racine Ironman 70.3 in July so that would qualify me. The scary part is say I do get a lottery slot, that would mean doing the Ironman Wisconsin on September 12, 2010 and then jetting off to Hawaii to do another Ironman in early October.

I told you I found another way in making this journey even crazier.
