It has been awhile since I have given you some food (pun intended) for thought. So I bring to you a simple true or false game.

2. Your blood sugar rises more than 39% if you toast your white bread. T or F
3. The average veggie burger contains five times the sodium of the average beef burger. T or F
4. Choosing albacore tuna over light tuna can cut your mercury in take by 39%. T or F
5. People who eat with napkins in their laps tend to have lower body mass indexes. T or F
6. Cut out 96 calories from your daily diet will make you 10 pounds lighter a year from now. T or F

Okay…I’m going to take a shot at this:

1. True – with 66% of Americans in the overweight category alone makes this disturbing, but what is worse 35% of the overweight people are in the obese category. By 2016 it is projected that 80% of all Americans will be overweight. This country and government would like a fix for the health care problem, starting here by making the population fitter and healthier this would do wonders in lowering the health care costs in this country.
2. False – White bread does raise your blood sugar levels quite a bit, but simply toasting the bread impacts how much it rises by 39%.
3. True – Just because it says veggie does not make it healthy. In fact this case the regular beef burger wins hands down in the sodium category. That being said the beef burger loses in other categories like calories or fat. A good substitute for both is ground turkey and season to taste.
4. False – Trick question. It is actually the other way around. Tuna accounts for 39% of all mercury in the US diet. Choose light over albacore and you cut your mercury levels by two thirds.
5. True – Why? I am not sure. My guess would be if you are eating and a napkin is in your lap generally means you are eating at a slower pace, therefore your body has the time to tell you that you are full. Where if you are eating at a faster pace (aka stuffing your face) the body doesn’t get that chance to tell you until it is to late.
6. True – So if you are eating at a sandwich shop and you order your meal with chips and a drink, go without the chips or substitute that soda for water and you will save 10 pounds over that year. You really don’t need the chips or soda anyway.
7. False – Another trick question. It is the opposite, a medium size orange has half the sugar and 3 more grams of fiber than a 8 oz glass of OJ.
8. False – OK that was an easy one. But this does provide a good reminder to all feeding the little ones. Even though they might cry, complain or cause a scene stuff those little ones with good choices vs. the junk that is advertised towards them. They will thank you years later when they are not fighting a lifetime of their own bad food choices.
9. False – Another trick question, but with some truth behind it. The answer really is once a week, not once a day. People are too stuck on a number and when they don’t reach that number the better chances that leads to frustration and quitting. The scale is only one gauge of many, from time to time a quick step on the scale helps point you in the correct direction. The bigger gauges are pants fitting better, shirts are baggier or if someone asks you are you losing weight.
10. False – The actual number is tripled! Oh Oh!
Gary you got 4 wrong or 60%. Sorry no curve here. I am sure you would be in the majority of those who would take this quiz.
Thanks for providing the answers. Great information here.
