Wings, wings, wings (can someone pick up the phone)
Ah nothing like starting out a nutrition post with a really bad pun, but hey it is me.
A couple of days ago I wrote a post about the Super Bowl and pizza. Now that the game is over what was up with those commercials? I mean seriously! The people at Doritos please I mean really $3 million dollars for each one of those commercials! Really?!?! OK I got off the point.
Today’s topic is about one of the favorite foods people eat during the game we just enjoyed, the Chicken Wing. In fact we like these little turkeys, oh wait, these little chickens soooooo much there was actually a shortage of these little buggers. Well if we really understood how bad these things are for us there might not be such a shortage.
I could pick on any of the chicken wings out there but the focus is on the Hooters 10 piece Buffalo Wings @ $9.99 and 1,010 calories. The chicken wing is already a fatty part of the chicken, but we humans deep fry them which DOUBLES the calories. What are we doing to ourselves!!!!
So what are we to do with our beloved chicken wings? Try grilling or oven roasting them instead, save 700 calories and $8.44. I’d say that is not a bad trade off.
Ingredients
- 2 lb. chicken wings (look for a mix of wing segments and drummettes)
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 1 tsp. chili powder
- 2 tbsp. butter
- 2 tbsp. hot sauce (book recommends Frank’s Red Hot sauce)
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1 cup plain Greek-style yogurt (book recommends Fage 2%)
- 2 tbsp. crumbled blue cheese
- salt and black pepper to taste
- celery sticks
Directions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees
- Toss the chicken with salt, pepper and chili powder and arrange on baking sheet
- Roast until the skin is lightly blistered and the meat is cooked all the way through, about 15 minutes
- Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet or saute’ pan, add in the hot sauce and half of the lemon juice
- Remove the wings from the pan and add directly to the hot pan, toss thoroughly coating every piece in the sauce
- Mix the yogurt, blue cheese and remaining lemon juice
- Season with salt and pepper
This makes 8 appetizer servings at $1.55 per serving and only 310 calories.
Again we can thank the folks from Cook This Not That for this recipe.

Wings are my absolute favorite food vice! Fortunately for me it’s more about the hot sauce. Thanks for hipping the rest of us to the recipe. Sounds like a perfect alternative for a Frank’s Hot Sauce fan.
My wife and I have been grilling the wings forever. She hates the idea of deep fat frying anything. Sometimes that’s too bad…. Ha!
Smart women!
Now if I can only find one for my vice ice cream, oh wait there’s chocolate, oh wait there is hamburgers, oh wait…this could go on forever.
This is a good wing recipe…I guess any wings are better than chicken strips right? Is there a lower calorie recipe for chicken strips?
You could always replace the wings with the strips in this recipe.
