The Road to the Ironman – OK I am a triathlete not a volleyball player

I GET IT!

OK let me say the last time I played volleyball was on my honeymoon, in fact I was the best player.  Well that wasn’t very hard, because I played in a pool with some highly drunk people at the resort in Cancun Kim and I were staying at, but I was the best player, really! Not being a drinker does have its advantages from to time. So 18 years ago was the last time, REALLY! Why won’t you believe me?

Now let me say WHAT WAS I THINKING! I walk into the gym tonight not that motivated and I saw a friend a little down in the dumps and knowing he liked to hit the volleyball around I noticed the volleyball nets were still up. I suggested we hit the ball back and forth to each other.

Excuse #3 keep in mind this was his home court. If I had him out on the bike or running or even swimming I would have toasted him in a minute. I was pleastly surprised on how my cardio was for my advanced age of 43 (he kept on reminding me.) Did I mention Chris is about 15 if not 20 years younger than me (Excuse #4 and that one made sound old.)

So what excuse am I on…oh that is right #5. If volleyball was just about running around again I could have had my way with this young whipper snapper (once again when did I become the old guy?) But it is not just about running around, it involves hitting this little white ball, using your arms and a fair share of a thing called pain (especially around the wrist area.) I mean OUCH!

Excuse #6 (Wow 6 already?!?!) I am made to go forward, maintain going forward and maintain going forward for along time. What is this side to side stuff? Going backwards! Really? Seriously? AHHHHH!

Well enough with the excuses, I did have fun, can’t feel my shoulders or wrists right now. Tomorrow’s long run will be a bit more interesting. But hey, at least I did not turn an ankle.

One last old man phrase, please? Get off my lawn!
