The Road to the Ironman #2 – Safe or sorry?
OK here is the problem.
In the past couple of weeks I have hit a stretch of running like I have never seen in my lifetime. I personally did something I never thought I would see I ran 13.1 miles under 1:50 minutes. There was a time I never thought I could run under 2 hours and I past that goal while training for the Rock ‘n Roll Marathon in February, once on a training run around the blasted track and twice actually in the race itself. Now I am under 1:50 that has me thinking of doing another marathon somewhere down the road to see if I can hold it together for a full marathon.
So I decided to take at least a full week off of running. Before you say WHAT, I haven’t told you about the problem yet.
Another record I take great pride is in over 20+ years of running I have never had any type of injury. Now I have had my fair share of aches and pains, but nothing that has prevented me from running. Well, I am running myself into one if I don’t back off. My right Achilles tendon has been barking up a storm, especially the first few steps after I have been sitting for awhile. So it is time to listen to myself and take some time off. Hopefully it will only be a week, but it might be two. Remember I am not getting any younger and hundreds, no thousands of miles pounding on the pavement, track, trail and treadmill the body needs time to rest.
It does help that I swim, bike and lift weights so the time off won’t be as bad as it could be. The problem is even though I enjoy those three other activities none can replace the fact I am a runner first and foremost. It has taken me 20+ years to get to the point I am today, I hate to take a step backward but better safe than sorry. A week or two is better than 6 months, a year or heaven forbid a life time.
So those who read this, learn, listen and think. Here is a person who loves to run, a person who has yet to suffer a major injury during his journey of becoming an athlete, runner, triathlete and finally an Ironman!. If I can do it, anyone can do it. Listen to your body. Listen to that little voice. A week or two in the over picture of things doesn’t mean much.
Until next time… Your Fitness Buddy.
Resolutions or infomercials, Which is worse?
Happy 2011! It is here the new year is beginning, a chance to wipe the slate clean and start all over! You know just saying that makes me shake my head. Why do we wait until the first day of the new year to beginning, wipe the slate clean or start all over? Why isn’t April 23 or June 3, or September 15?
Resolutions, why? Isn’t there a saying resolutions are made to be broke… or something to that affect? OK OK OK, I get it, but here is my question.
Why wait to the 1st of the year to say you are going to make “changes” to better your life? Plus saying you are going to make a change is one thing, but actually doing it is another. How many times have you seen me type these next two phrases.
Enough is enough…
It is a journey...
The majority of the time the resolution is already broken by January 2. Why waste your time with words. Actions speak louder than words. If this is the year, DO IT! As soon as you hit a bump in the road, don’t cave like a house of cards. Enough is enough, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and push on through. If you don’t, things won’t change and YOU HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF!
It is called life. It is yours, not your husband/wife/boyfriends/girlfriends/kids/boss/co-workers/pets or whom/whatever’s. IT IS YOUR LIFE! It is the only one you have, why not make the best of it. Is it easy? No. Do some have it harder than others? Yes. Do some have it easier than others? Yes. But no of that matters, because if you focus on you first the rest will fall into line.
Resolutions are a waste of time. Actions are the stepping stones to moving yourself forward. Don’t be afraid of taking a step forward. Even if it is a wrong step, learn from it and improve for the next step.
Now onto the next topic, infomercials.
As the holidays approach they grow in numbers. They hit the pinnacle just as the New Year hits. You know, they are on almost as much as those annoying political commercials we endure during some election for ____ (fill in the blank).
Just 6 minutes a day and for three easy payments of $19.95 you shake this dohicky thing back and forth and you will get those arms, abs, butt, and legs their models have on those infomercials. REALLY FOLKS? If you believe that give me the three easy payments of $19.95 and I will use it, because you will still get the same effect, NOTHING. At least I walk away buying something nice for me with your money.
There are no short cuts! Don’t believe me? For those that have some type of pause live TV function do this. When one of these infomercials comes, hit the pause button the second you see the small print. Yes, there is always small print. Read it. It maybe so small you can’t read it, so I will give you some of the highlights.
- Results not typical (that is a big one)
- Results in conjunction with diet and exercise (They should say throw away the $19.95 piece of junk and diet and exercise instead)
- Return for a full refund, except you have to pay for shipping and handling (they know that is to much of a hassle for most)
- This diet works in conjunction with exercise
- This exercise machine works in conjunction with a diet
Enough! Why are you letting these “people” (term used loosely) take your money. Stop! The only permanent solution is eating better and exercise. Sorry there are no short cuts that work forever, remember this is a journey. The next fantastic diet may work for a little while but the majority gain it all back, plus more. Ever wonder why all these “great” exercise machines become coat hangers or better yet why are there so many on EBAY? They don’t work.
2011
Is it going to be different this year? Really? You probably have said it before (like last year). You wasted another year. Enough is enough… Make a lifestyle change, not a resolution. Make a lifestyle change, instead of looking towards the next short cut gimmick. It is your life, no one is charge of it except you.
Which is worse, the answer is they are equally bad for you.
You can do it…. Your Fitness Buddy
The other half (more like 70%) of health and fitness journey
- Fewer ingredients = healthier food
- “Good source of” may mean “bad for you”
- Work the edges
- Look high and low
- Beat the breakfast blues
- Buy frozen fruit in cold weather
- “Reduced fat” may make you fat
- Check yourself out
- Shop on Wednesday nights
- Natural doesn’t mean squat
- Bulk up when you can
- Don’t buy the hype
- Choose the chicken leg over breast
- Ask when the next shipment arrives
- Look in unlikely places
- “Lightly sweetened” could mean “sugar overload”
- Don’t fall for diet drinks
- Buy real juice
- Don’t be 100 percent mislead
- “Zero grams of trans fat” may include trans fat!
My string of inconsistency continues: Sorry life got in the way. I have been meaning to finish up with the last 5 so here they are.
21. Compare the front label with the back – What is stated on the front may not always be what is stated on the back, when you read the ingredients. The front might state something that is good for you, but in turn the back states it may only have a small portion of what is stated on the front.
22. Steer clear of 100-calorie packs – A study from Brown University in 2007 found that people ate the same amount of cookies and chips regardless of whether they ate from a large multi-serving bag or a single-serving bag. A Fitness Buddy note: I read this over numerous times and I am not sure about this one. Maybe it needed to include more information, but the way I read it a person will open up more than one 100-calorie pack per sitting. If this is true then I totally understand the statement. If a person sticks to a single 100-calorie pack versus a multi-serving pack, are they saying a person eats the exact single serving size? I doubt that. So yes eat more than 100-calorie bag, BAD! Eat just the one 100-calorie bag, OK! Saving money tip: The 100-calorie bags are more expensive per serving compared to the multi-serving brethren. Buy the multi-serving bag, then break out the zip lock baggies and measure out a single serving size and dump them into the bag. Done, cheaper!
23. Invest in smaller plates and bowls – Researchers have found that people will generally eat whatever is in front of them. For those that are old enough think back to your dinner plates when you where a kid, they averaged 8″ in diameter, today over 12″ is common. Less food on the plate the less you eat. Mom was right to say clean off your plate, but they were smaller plates back then.
24. Consider canola oil – Canola oil has less monounsaturated to saturated fat compared to the vaunted extra virgin olive oil. Olive oil’s price is near $1.00 per ounce, a high-end canola oil costs about a quarter.
25. Learn to love lentils – Lentils versus brown rice saves money. A pound bag has 11 grams of fiber and 10 grams of protein in each serving size. Plus it is rich in folate and B vitamin, plus saves you 41 cents a pound versus brown rice.
Well that is it. 25 tips on beating the grocery store at their own game, eating healthier and keeping an eye on the pocket book.
Until next time The Fitness Buddy…
Boy we are in trouble!
I just read over an article that appeared on the MSN Health and Fitness website titled – Obesity rates jump in 28 states.
Simply put 2/3 of the states now have obesity rates above 25% of their population!
Please take what I am about to say with a grain of salt. In this world there are plenty of people, groups, organizations and even countries like to see the good old USA go away. Well if we keep going down this path all they have to do is wait us out and will do it ourselves.
To show how bad things have become back in 1991 (less than 20 years ago) not one state had their obesity rate above 20%. People wonder why health care cost have risen so fast? Well look at your waistline! 1/4 of all health cost can be traced back to obesity, just imagine if we were a fitter and healthier country the health care cost would be lower.
The fattest state? Mississippi. At this rate when we spell that state we better start adding in a few more “S’s” and a few more “P’s”. Mississippi has 33.8% of their population being obese. Notice I am not saying OVERWEIGHT in this article.
- Mississippi
- Alabama
- Tennessee
- West Virginia
- Louisiana
- Oklahoma
- Kentucky
- Arkansas
- South Carolina
- Michigan
See a trend here? Besides Michigan all the states on the list are considered southern states. Yes, income seems to be a driving factor but also the style of cooking generally found in this area of the country can not be discounted.
Healthiest?
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- D.C.
- Massachusetts
- Hawaii
- Vermont
- Rhode Island Utah
- Montana
- New Jersey
Before any of you living in those states rejoice only Colorado finished with a number below 20%. So 1 in 4 of you in those states fall into the obese category. Only D.C. declined, so Colorado you probably will be above 20% pretty soon.
Another trend? Race does have a hand in this. Blacks and Latinos outweigh their white counterparts in 40 of the 50 states. There is a clear link between race, poverty and obesity.
How does this change?
White, Black, Latino, a south state, a north state it doesn’t matter. We are all in this boat together.
- Eat out less, eat at home. Before there was a fast food restaurant on every corner, eating out was actually a luxury. Eat at home you might get to meet someone called family members.
- Eating at home also means making smarter choices. It is easy to see “cheap” processed food is a cause of some of this. I know I am going to get an argument on this, but I have a problem with people saying fruits, vegetables, fish and so on are expensive. Have you ever heard of a farmer’s market? For those in the south, you might even have the luxury of having a fish market. “Cheap” food is quick and easy. Rip open a bag or box and add water is no way to eat.
- If you eat out, eat less! Forget about the BIGGIE SIZE, for $1 more make it a large, eat only half of what is served because what is served is usually 2 servings or more. You don’t need to have an appetizer or a dessert.
- Move! Get off your butt! Turn off the TV, put down the phone, stop tweeting and go for a walk!
These are 4 options, but it simply comes down to this. Unless you want to change, I mean really WANT TO CHANGE, nothing will. I seen it, I have heard it, but until you have your enough is enough moment nothing will happen.
Coming to terms with this obesity issue, don’t expect the government to help, don’t expect a weight loss program to help, don’t expect buying a gym membership to help. The only way to help is look in the mirror. YOU and only you (hopefully some help from loved ones and friends) will get you off this boat! Another way of putting it. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS!
Until next time… Your Fitness Buddy
You are what you eat and a lesson well learned?
How many times have I said this is a journey? MAKE SMART CHOICES!
What happened to Kim and I on Sunday was just another lesson learned. We began the day sleeping in and then making it off to a Barnes and Noble for a couple of hours of browsing then the lunch bell rang. So we hopped back into the car and started to look for a place to eat, but we wanted to eat at a place that would be different than our normal eating out places. As we drove we came to a pizza place you may of heard of called CiCi’s pizza. Kim said she was hungry for pizza, but I was a little weary because it is all you can eat for $3.99. I really wasn’t worried about the all you can eat part, but I was worried about the $3.99 part. I mean really how good can a $3.99 all you can eat pizza buffet really taste?
Well…
I am sorry and I really don’t what to offend the people at CiCi’s, I am sure they are very nice people but seriously YOU FEED PEOPLE THIS STUFF? It all starts out at the “salad bar” (yes I use quotes). The lettuce was dry (it wasn’t a late lunch we were eating at 11:30), the toppings were passable but the dressings!!!!!! Ranch, Blue Cheese, Thousand Island and French, might as well asked for the heart attack right there. They did have an oil dressing, but I am pretty sure it was closer to motor oil than olive oil. YES remember Jim it was only $3.99 and it really is a pizza buffet, I get it.
Which brings me to the pizza. The concept is good, come up to a buffet of pizza choose which slices you like to eat and pig out. Oh yea, don’t worry how it will taste because there will be none! If this was delivery I would have ate the box! Again I am sorry to the people at CiCi’s I am sure they are good people, but seriously!
We wonder why as a nation we are in a serious problem of people being overweight or obese. Beside the weak salad bar, the lack of taste in the pizza, what really turned my stomach was watching the rest of the people eating. Stuffing their mouths with plate after plate of this stuff. YES I UNDERSTAND IT IS $3.99, but I am at lost for words.
So maybe I am too snooty or I am missing a piece of the puzzle before I totally write off CiCi’s pizza. Tonight I went to their website to hopefully understand this a bit more. I was surprised to see they actually had nutritional info. I clicked on the tab and looked over their assortment and if you just go by the numbers, their slices averaged 120 to 140 calories. Great if you eat one or two pieces, not what I saw happening. Maybe each person had one or two plates filled with this stuff. If you read the fine print the serving size is one piece.
The nutritional info actually states the following – Watch what you eat. Especially when it’s good for you. ARE THEY SAYING THEIR PIZZA IS GOOD FOR YOU?!?!?!?! Ok Ok Ok, calm down Jim. Let’s read on. All their items contain 0 grams of trans fat (which they capitalize and add a woo whoo.) Wait for it… clap… clap… clap… wish I had some streamers (yes that is sarcasm). They go on to say this proof of their commitment to provide guests with healthy choices that don’t compromise CiCi’s great taste or quality. OH COME ON! TASTE?
Well I feel a little better, but I haven’t finished the story yet, I must finish out the rest of the day for you. Kim did apologize for the choice, but that was OK because it was a reminder on how we use to eat. That thought alone makes me a little queasy. About 15 minutes later we were done, took a nap, forced ourselves to workout (it was ugly), came home took another nap, woke up and took another nap, woke up and went to bed.
You are what you eat! Garbage in, garbage out!
Lesson learned, while most think that eating healthy is hard, expensive and generally not worth it… I can point you in a direction of a place that sell $3.99 pizza buffets under the premiss that they are actually good for and let you decide.
Please CiCi’s don’t get mad at me for disliking you pizza and I am sure there are plenty of people that would be on your side, but turn around and look at them. Do these people standing up for you really the healthiest or fittest group on the block? If you like one bit of advice, just sell your product for what it is… cheap… there is nothing wrong with that. But to sell it on being healthy and good for you? PLEASE!
Lesson #1 Core = Six Pack Abs (eventually)
It has been a few days since I really sat down to write out a few good blogs. One reason is life once again has been busy, but other reason I ordered a new book about fitness with the hopes it will have plenty of goodies to share with you about health and fitness. The book? It comes from Men’s Health and it is called The Big Book of Exercises. (There is also a Women’s version with pretty girl models instead of the dudes with the guns and abs)
From my early readings the book will help provide myself with the additional knowledge I am looking for to keep this health and fitness journey moving forward. Let’s just say there are tons of new ideas for exercise to help keep people moving forward in their health and fitness journey. Plus, I am always looking for more ideas to keep The Fitness Buddy moving forward.
So why am I going to take information from a book to give to you, if you can just go out and get the book yourself? Well it is a BIG BOOK and it could take you a while to get through and take some more time to figure out to use all the information. I hope to provide a condense or a concise version of the messages they are trying to provide to the masses. Remember you can still get the book at anytime, I sure the folks at Men’s Health won’t mind the free publicity I am giving them.
Today we are covering thoughts about the Core. Through my journey there is one thing and one thing that men and women seem to want; SIX PACK ABS! I mean just watch TV. Whether it is a TV show or the million commercials the six pack is everywhere. Are we so vain? YES. So we (the actual people that “exercise”) believe doing crunches and crunches alone will make those six pack abs shine and in turn by doing the crunch we will loose weight and get thinner.
This is a myth!
Don’t me wrong you should work those abs, because a strong core is the starting point of most other exercises, but more on that in a bit.
So if you still think doing crunches will help you loose those unwanted pounds here is a fact that researchers at the University of Virgina found. It will take 250,000 crunches to burn one pound of fat. I will let you take a moment to fathom that… Another way of saying that would be you must do 100 crunches a day for 7 years… another moment… Yes you are making those abdominal muscles stronger and the six pack is developing, but the crunches are doing nothing to take away the layer/s you have in front of those abdominal muscles. Folks it just doesn’t work that way, sorry. In order to loose the layer/s you must burn away more calories. This can be done a couple of different ways.
- You can use a magical vibrating belt that will melt away those pounds… (just checking to see if you are paying attention, THE BELTS DO NOT WORK!) Don’t believe me ? Why do they have small print in their commercials? Hmmmmm
OK seriously here are the three choices (actually all three work together)
- Cardio work, yes this means running, walking, skipping, jumping or doing something that involves you moving.
- Along with cardio work, strength training. Involving more muscles working out means more calories burned. This also means, while you are trying for those wonderful six pack abs, the other muscles are getting stronger and leaner. The end result is the total package (meaning you) will look and feel better.
- Nutrition (fancy word for what are you stuffing in your pie hole). I have discussed this in many previous blogs to loose that layer/s or what my wonderful wife Kim calls chubs, it is calories in and calories out. Plus the better the food the better for the body. (Look for a new blog soon about a lunch Kim and I had on Sunday, which will explain that a bit further.)
The substitute for the Crunch? The good old Plank! What is a plank?
- Start be getting in a push up position, but bend your elbows and rest your weight on your forearms instead of your hands.
- Your body should form a straight line from your shoulders to your ankles. (Get that butt down!)
- Brace your core by contracting your abs as if you were about to be punched in the gut.
- Hold this position for 30 seconds and breath deep.
- Helpful hints, squeezing your butt helps, elbows should be directly under you shoulders.
If you can’t hold this position for 30 seconds don’t get fustrated, hold for 5 to 10 seconds, rest for 5 and go again. It won’t take long for you to build to 30 seconds. Once you accomplish 30 seconds here is the next challenge. At home try to make it through the commercials of your favorite TV show.
There are numerous ways to progress from a plank and I will cover those soon, but stability exercises are very important. They help promote lower back health and will improve your performance in any sport you choose to do. Oh yea they also will develop those six pack abs that all of us vain Americans desire.

Keep true on your message
This is an article recently passed along to me. I will discuss after you read the article…
On NBC’s The Biggest Loser, trainer Jillian Michaels is known for her no-bull-allowed attitude in the gym as she attempts to help her obese pupils drop massive amounts of weight in a very short time. But one woman is now seeking class-action status for a lawsuit that claims Jillian should have had the same no-nonsense stance toward a diet supplement she’s lent her name to. In a suit filed yesterday in a Los Angeles court, Christie Christensen alleges false advertising of a product called Jillian Michaels Maximum Strength Calorie Control, which she claims did nothing to curb her appetite or help her shed pounds. At the crux of the lawsuit is the product’s slogan, “Two Capsules Before Main Meals and You Lose Weight… That’s It!“ In the suit, which also names manufacturer Basic Research and seeks unspecified damages, the plaintiff states, “Ms. Michaels knows better — taking two pills before eating does not miraculously cause weight loss.” The court filing states Christensen purchased the product because it was endorsed by Michaels, who also lends her name to at least four other diet supplements, along with a handful of other fitness products.
OK
Well I almost don’t know where I should begin. I am mostly sad. Let me say Jillian Michaels is someone I still look up too, but reading this article it proves it is easy to lose track of you message. She is still a great trainer and has turned dozens of lives around on The Biggest Loser, plus countless lives outside The Biggest Loser. But it is sad to say she has become a company and is also interested in selling products that “help” people lose weight. I can not say why she has gone this route, she is all about doing it the right way. Work hard, exercise, watch your diet and the pounds will come off. So I guess she is not immune to the almighty dollar, sad.
Now that has been said, there are no miracle pills! There are no short cuts. Should she be sued? No, because any person with common sense should know this. We are all adults and should be responsible for our actions. To blame someone else for the situation you placed yourself in, still is not correct no matter the product or message. Everyone has that little voice that tells you what is right, what is wrong or proceed with caution. Plus what is the saying? If it sounds to good to be true it probably is.
